Top-ranked Xavier sweeps Lions
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · October 5th, 2017

It was a matchup between a pair of top-five ranked schools as volleyball's Class 4A's number one ranked team Cedar Rapids Xavier squared off with Linn-Mar, which sits at number five in the latest Class 5A rankings. The Lions had the home-court advantage but the Saints weren't fazed as they disposed of Linn-Mar in three sets 25-18, 28-21 and 25-19.

Ellie Von Lehmden had a team-best 10 kills, while the versatile Megan Renner added 24 assists to help the Lion cause. Renner also recorded a team-high three blocks while Von Lehmden had a pair of aces to lead that department as well.

The loss drops the Lions to 21-6 on the season and 3-2 in MVC play. Linn-Mar was back in action this week against Cedar Rapids Prairie and will look to compete well at the West Side Invitational this Saturday hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Pool play will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Looking into next week, the Lions volleyball squad will compete against Dubuque Wahlert on Tuesday, October 10, at 7 p.m. Wahlert has a current record of 11-8 and are fifth in the Mississippi Conference behind Iowa City West.
