Westside Volleyball Invite
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · October 12th, 2017

The annual Westside Volleyball Invitational tournament was held this weekend in Cedar Rapids, and per usual, it featured teams from all over the state of Iowa as well as teams from different classes amongst the state. The competition was stiff and both the Linn-Mar, and Marion volleyball teams experienced that first-hand on Saturday. Linn-Mar won three but suffered a loss in the opening round of the championship bracket while Marion won two and lost three, falling in the consolation semifinals.

Linn-Mar was a perfect 3-0 in pool play, toppling the likes of West Liberty, Grundy Center and Des Moines Roosevelt while Marion was 1-2 in their pool play, defeating Cedar Rapids Kennedy but losing to Iowa City West and Dike-New Hartford.

The Lions were bounced in straight sets by Ankeny Centennial ending their day in the championship bracket. The Indians defeated Cedar Rapids Washington before falling to Des Moines Roosevelt in the Silver Bracket.

Dike-New Hartford went on to win the championship while Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the consolation bracket championship.

The Lions volleyball squad then played this past Tuesday against Dubuque Wahlert, results unknown at press time. This Saturday, the girls will look to compete well at the MVC Volleyball Tournament at Iowa City High School with pool play to begin at 9 a.m.

For the Indians, the girls competed in pool play of the WaMac Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday, results unknown at press time. Bracket play will be Thursday, October 12, at Marion High School with a start time of 4 p.m.

The two high school teams will have a little break before Regionals begin on Wednesday, October 18.

Marion, currently with a record of 20-12-0, will have home-court advantage and compete against Iowa City Liberty (13-17-0) for the first round of Class 4A Region 6 bracket play. First serve will be at 7 p.m. If the Indians end with a win, the team will compete against Independence (28-6-0) on Tuesday, October 24, with start time at 7 p.m. at Independence.

Linn-Mar, currently with a record of 25-7-0, has a bye week for the Class 5A Region 5 regionals. The girls will have home-court advantage as they compete against Cedar Rapids Prairie (19-11-0) on Tuesday, October 24, at 7 p.m.
