Doug Neighbor from Farmers State Bank was selected to be the 2017 Marion Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year. The award was announced by Chamber President Jill Ackerman at the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting, held October 4 at the Collins Road Marriott.

This award was jointly presented to Mr. Neighbor by Ackerman and Marion Times Managing Editor Sarah Olberding.

Mr. Neighbor has been at FSB for 45 years, 15 of them as president/CEO. During his years there, he has served as co-chair of the Milestones of Marion Capital Campaign and has served on various boards and committees, including the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA, the St. Luke's Board of Directors, Marion Cares, Big Brothers and Sisters and many more. He has also overseen the Farmers State Bank charitable giving program, giving back more than $2.5 million to the local communities which FSB serves.

Ackerman added, "Doug Neighbor has truly set an example of what it means to give back." She remarked that what those around him appreciate the most is the humility he always demonstrates, even when receiving accolades.

He was described as "never afraid of being the first one" to move forward to support a good cause to benefit the community.

Mr. Neighbor expressed his thanks to the Chamber of Commerce and the members on the selection committee. He said, "I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award."

Mr. Neighbor also mentioned and thanked his wife Marva, who has supported him and encouraged him over the years. He also recognized and thanked his parents for their confidence in allowing him to lead a fantastic and great team at FSB.

He said, "We have always encouraged a philosophy to give back to the community. Our staff members have continually logged over 5,000 hours annually in volunteer time. For that I'm very proud."

On another note, he mentioned working with Andy Streit on the steering committee of the capital campaign committee for the YMCA project. He called it "truly a legacy project."

Mr. Neighbor had been involved in the YMCA campaign 30 years ago when the existing Y came into being in Marion. And now, this much later, he is encouraging everyone to make this current campaign successful.

Please join the Chamber and the community in dropping by FSB and thanking Mr. Neighbor for his many years of service. He is truly deserving of this honor as the 2017 Marion Citizen of the Year.
