Kinseth Hospitality to bring Marriott to Marion
by Report submitted · October 12th, 2017

A new tenant will be located in Marion's Central Corridor on 7th Avenue. Kinseth Hospitality has announced its plans to construct an 88-room TownPlace Suites by Marriott and will appeal to extended stay travelers.

Based in North Liberty, Kinseth Hospitality operates more than 70 hotels in 10 states across the Midwest, including the newly built Hilton hotel in Iowa City.

According to a Marion Economic Development Corp. (MEDCO) news release, "The $12.4 million hotel ... (will feature) an on-site fitness center, swimming pool, business center, and suites with full kitchens." The hotel will be four stories and will create 30 new hospitality jobs to the area.

The new Marriott will be located at 2823 7th Avenue, which is the previous Prince Agri Products site. This location, part of the Central Corridor Project, will welcome new businesses, retail, and commercial development.

"We couldn't be more excited to bring this Marriott TownePlace Suites hotel to Marion and be a part of the Marion community," says Vice President for Kinseth Hospitality Ben Kinseth in the release. "Adding a Marriott branded hotel product is a really good fit in a growing community like Marion."

Marion City Manager Lon Pluckhahn stated, "This will be a signature project in the redevelopment of Marion's former railroad corridor. The hotel will drive additional development at the east end of the central corridor, bringing new jobs and vitality to the area."

According to the release, "In 2015, developer (Gibbs Lamb Drown) GLD Properties LLC secured $1 million in brownfield/grayfield tax credits to support the cleanup and redevelopment of the site that was once home to industry and several abandoned railroad lines."

The Marriott will be owned by Marion Hotel Associates, Inc., which is a partnership between GLD investors Dave Drown, Adam Gibbs, and Jim Lamb. It also will include the Kinseth Hospitality team and a group of local investors.

MEDCO President Nick Glew added, "We are confident that this is just the beginning of many similar investments that will solidify Marion as the best place in Iowa to raise a family and grow a business."

Construction of the hotel is currently underway and an official ground breaking ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 25, at 11 a.m. Completion of the hotel is expected in the fall of 2018.
