Assumption thwarts Marion's playoff chances
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · October 26th, 2017

Needing a win to guarantee a Class 3A playoff berth last Thursday night in Davenport, the Marion football team dropped what ended up being their season finale to a very talented Assumption team by a 49-21 tally. The loss gave the Knights the automatic bid along with West Delaware for Class 3A District 4 and left Marion on the outside looking in.

Assumption got off to a hot start on both sides of the ball and never looked back. Assumption quarterback Jayce Levy had a career day, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 146 yards passing and one touchdown pass.

Offensively for the Indians, Trevor Paulsen threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns to help the Marion cause. Assumption controlled the trenches all night long, holding Marion to just 16 rushing yards on 16 carries. Alex Whalen hauled in an 86-yard touchdown strike from Paulsen while Chris Mohwinkle had a 20-yard touchdown grab along with an 85-yard kickoff return. Iowa commit Blair Brooks finished with five catches for 44 yards.

On the defensive side of things, Whalen finished with a career best 15-and-a-half tackles in his final prep football game. Whalen also scooped up a fumble while Dawson Kirk hauled in another interception.

The loss ends Marion's season with a record of 6-3 overall. Assumption will play Washington on Friday, October 27, in first round playoff action.
