Jeremy Fopma left everything on the course last Saturday in Fort Dodge. With a chance to repeat as the Class 3A Individual Cross Country Champion on the line, the Marion senior came up just short and had to settle for second after a gutsy performance. A familiar face former Indian and current Center Point-Urbana runner Myles Bach, edged Fopma by just over five seconds to win the Class 3A title.

Bach won the Class 3A boys' race with a time of 15:49.1 while Fopma's runner-up performance resulted in a time of 15:54.8. The former teammates pulled away late from Decorah's Andrew Kephart and Grinnell's Thomas Clower to provide a thrilling ending to another action-packed cross country campaign.

It was the final cross country race for Fopma as a Marion Indian and there was a small passing of the torch on Saturday as Harrison Vander Linden had his best race as an Indian at the State Meet. The junior crossed the stripe with a time of 16:35.4, good enough to place 12th among a tough group of runners.

Gavin Hiler placed 44th for Marion, Cole Hemann ran his way to a 53rd place run while Connor Bjornsen crossed the stripe in 78th. Matthew Brase and Tanner Shindelar rounded things out for Marion with finishes of 86th and 90th respectively.

The team performance by the Indians gave them a sixth place finish overall with 189 points. Gilbert won the Class 3A State Title with a total score of 75.

Marion junior Hallie Kephart competed individually in the Class 3A girls' field, placing 40th with a time of 19:59.8. Center Point-Urbana sophomore Adrianna Katcher won the Class 3A individual crown with a time of 18:23.5 while Dubuque Wahlert won the Class 3A Girls' State Championship.
