Independence halts Marion's bid for State
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · November 2nd, 2017

After splitting their first two match-ups in regular season play, the Marion Indians and Independence Mustangs volleyball teams settled things on the court once and for all on Tuesday, October 24, in Independence. With a trip to a Class 4A Substate Final on the line, it was the Mustangs who prevailed over Marion, winning 3-1 and ending the Indians' season.

Independence won sets one and two, but Marion battled back to claim set number three. A thrilling fourth set resulted in a 25-21 set win for Independence and that spelled the end for Marion's run toward another State Volleyball berth.

Senior Andrea Landuyt had a marvelous final

volleyball game as an Indian, smashing home 18 kills, while junior Randi Wright had 11 of her own. Senior Caitlyn Smith had 46 assists and 16 digs in addition to a perfect 17-for-17 serving.

The loss pushed Marion's record to 26-14, still a very successful season. The team repeated as WaMaC Conference Champions, a conference that is widely regarded as one of the best in the state.

Advancing to the substate final, Independence went on to beat Center Point-Urbana, punching their ticket to the Class 4A State Tournament.
