New Mariott Hotel, to be the springboard for Marion growth

In keeping with Marion's Central Corridor redevelopment vision, city officials, area civic leaders, Kinseth Hospitality of North Liberty representatives, and Chamber Ambassadors joined together for a TownePlace Suites by Marriott ground-breaking celebration at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, near the 2823 7th Avenue building site.

According to, the new 88-room, extended stay Marriott amenities will include "an on-site fitness center, swimming pool, business center, and suites with full kitchens. The four-story hotel project is anticipated to create 30 new hospitality jobs."

Marion Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO) President Nick Glew was among four speakers who addressed the crowd under a large tent awning. He said the $12.4 million year-long Marriott building project is an important part of Marion's Central Corridor expansion plan.

"It is important because it sets the expectation for other developers that will follow this project as it [comes to completion]. ... We just don't want a redevelopment project; we want the best redevelopment project that we can get," Glew said.

Marion Mayor Nicolas AbouAssaly also spoke during the ground-breaking event. He said, "We knew ... the first project out of the gate had to be something that was significant and substantial that would set the standard and drive the redevelopment of the entire industrial area in this section. ... And this is what we were hoping for, a really wonderful hotel, a quality hotel in our central business district which will really be a catalyst and a game changer."

Julie Stow of Go Cedar Rapids told those in attendance, "We know this is going to be a signature property and a great addition to the community, and we can't wait to promote it to visitors."

And Kinseth Hospitality Vice President Ben Kinseth also said, "I really feel like we have the right product, at the right place, at the right time." The new Marriott will "really [be] two hotels in one." The hotel will accommodate guests staying only one night, and others who will stay up to 30 nights. He also said each room will have a kitchenette. "All business segments will love this hotel." he said

Also, "In 2015, developer GLD Properties LLC secured $1 million in brownfield/grayfield tax credits to support the clean-up and redevelopment of the site that was once home to industry and several abandoned railroad lines.

"The new hotel will be owned by Marion Hotel Associates Inc., a partnership between GLD investors Dave Drown, Adam Gibbs, and Jim Lamb as well as the Kinseth Hospitality team and a group of local business investors." [Kinseth Hospitality to Bring Business Class Hotel to Marion's Central Corridor/]
