70 YEARS AGO 1947

Wintry weather occupied this area for the past week. The temperature from Friday to Wednesday varied from 20 to 29 degrees. There was an inch of snow on Friday and an inch and one half on Sunday, which made driving difficult.

The hot lunch program, long awaited, will begin next Monday at Marion High School and at the Lincoln School next door. Mrs. Stanley Kellams is in charge, aided by Mrs. Clare Strickell and Mrs. Oscar Byam. The Westinghouse Company sold the school a new refrigerator and roaster at half price through the local light company.

George Bright will build a new house in Marion at 1200 9th Street. Dimensions are 26 x 32 feet. Contractor is T. J. Olinger of Toddville. Cost will be $6,000.

50 YEARS AGO 1967

The Simpsons' Town Square Book Shop is advertising wonderful gifts for Christmas giving at 665 11th Street. They have books for both young and old.

Charlie's Pizza, 777 10th Street in Marion offers 25-minute pick-up service for unexpected guests during this holiday season. Normal hours are 4 p.m. to midnight, weekdays; 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday; and 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. They will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

30 YEARS AGO 1987

The Granger House, 970 10th Street in Marion, will be decorated in the style of 100 years ago for the coming holidays. The rooms will feature special Christmas scenes and decorations. Grandfather will be telling stories while Grandmother bakes cookies. Music of the era will help capture the flavors of the past. The Granger House has been authentically restored to reflect the lives and times of the last century.

The Marion Sentinel newspaper has selected its choices for honors on the Linn-Mar and Marion High School football teams for this year. For Linn-Mar: Lion of the Year is Tom Marko, with Offensive honor to Chris Helgerson and Defense to Kent Ochs. The Marion High Indian of the Year honors go to Rob McComas. Offense player honoree is Todd Hutchins and Defense is Aaron McLeod.
