Marion girls dominate Linn-Mar at Rivalry game on Saturday
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · November 30th, 2017

No matter the sport, a loss will always leave a sour taste in your mouth. When you don't lose very much, that taste gets even more sour. In the case of the Marion girls' basketball team, the team dealt with two very sour losses last season: once in the state championship game to North Scott, and another to its cross-town rival, Linn-Mar. The loss to the Lions came at Rivalry Saturday last year, but at this year's event, the Indians made sure the team wasn't taking another loss on its record, and the girls took care of business by a final score of 61-16.

It was all Marion from the beginning, leading 12-4 after the first quarter and 28-10 at the halftime intermission. A smothering defensive performance in the second half held the Lions to just six points over the last 16 minutes.

Senior Mia Laube led the charge with 15 points and four steals while freshman Riley Wright made an impact off the bench scoring 11 points. Senior floor general Chloe Rice had 10 points and four assists while Kayba Laube had nine points, connecting on all six of her free throw attempts.

As for the Lions, senior Ally Johnson led the team in scoring, with eight points, while fellow senior Megan Murphy chipped in three points and a team-high five rebounds.

It was Marion's first game and first victory of the season, while Linn-Mar fell to 0-2 after the loss at Kohawk Arena. They dropped their season opening contest on the road against Bettendorf 58-33. Johnson and Skyler Presler both scored seven points while Murphy and Jamison Felder scored five points to help the Lion cause.

Marion's next game was a road matchup with Maquoketa on Tuesday, November 28, while Linn-Mar's next game will be against City High on the road. Results unknown at press time.
