MISD School Board discusses district priorities
by DJ Kauffman Correspondent · December 7th, 2017

The Marion Independent School District Board of Education discussed priorities during a 4:30 p.m. Monday, November 27, Work Session. The Board focused on Goal 5: Establish Efficient Systems to Ensure Long Range Extended Learning Community Resources Support District's, Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals.

The Board talked about hiring an outside company to evaluate the school district as a whole, in order to help them make a road map before prioritizing projects. They cited Urbandale's success in this area. Also, Superintendent Chris Dyer said he would like to reach out to the district's community and let them look at the priorities once they become established.

Several board members discussed the district's high school. According to Business Manager John Donner, there are funding limits with building a new high school, adding new wings, or updating the current facility; therefore, a "dream within your limits" multi-step plan would be needed. Donner also said funding can be transferred for projects such as home schooling.

Board Member Bill Huntoon said he would like to see dollars go into building a new football field near the high school, while others questioned how this would impact the neighborhood.

In addition, air conditioning in three buildings and a new Starry Elementary sign were also addressed. Board Member Shari Funck asked about old vs. new air conditioning technology, and the Starry signage cost could be between $6,000 and $7,500, they said.

Board Member Diana Zrudsky said she would like any safety concern items to be fixed with available dollars before additional district priorities. "Reconfiguration is a piece we have to consider," said Board Member Brent VanWey, and Board President Jill Hansen said they need to be equal with boys' and girls' sites.
