It was Christmas time in the City, where folks sang with carolers strolling about and others took horse-drawn carriage rides during a 2017 Christmas in the Park and Peppermint Walk on Friday, December 1, from 4 to 8 p.m.

During the event, children laughing as people smiled at others passing, brought a feeling of Christmas. And on the 10th Street corner, where strings of holiday lights, and even stop lights, blinked a bright red and green, were Mr. and Mrs. Claus arriving on a large fire truck for Santa and his special reindeer's big scene in City Square Park.

Kids who bunched aboard the city's Peppermint Express received jingle bells to ring-a-ling during the Peace Tree lighting. They also left hats, gloves, and blankets on the caboose for the Keep Your Neighbors Warm giving project. And near the depot, the Eastern Iowa Brass Band (quintet) filled listeners' ears with holiday sounds.

Adding to the merriment were special appearances given by Elsa and Anna from Disney's Frozen to a bustling crowd, who ate fresh popped popcorn and drank hot cocoa all around.

Busy sidewalks in Uptown Marion were dressed in holiday style, during the annual Main Street Peppermint Walk holiday shopping event. The Peppermint Walk included a special open house, where Uptown "merchants, restaurants and businesses" participated in the Holiday Passport.

Throughout the celebration, citizens took a break from the cold, with a visit to the Marion Public Library, where they spent time looking through Friends of the Marion Library books and music for sale, and children enjoyed making fun crafts in the Library's meeting room. Music by a "Holiday Tuba Ensemble" also filled the air in the lobby as well.

In addition, the Marion Heritage Center offered patrons a warm place to relax, while listening to "The Marion Big Band play a mix of jazzy holiday and classic big band tunes."

The Christmas in the Park and Peppermint Walk event was free to the community, "thanks to the Marion Chamber Platinum Community Partners - Farmers State Bank, Fosters Heating and Air Conditioning, ImOn Communications, MercyCare Community Physicians, and Townsquare Media."
