by By Sue Gerth, Marion Public Library Customer Experience Coordinator · December 7th, 2017

Book clubs remain as popular as ever; they are a great way to connect with fellow reading enthusiasts, and are only limited by your imagination. If you would like to be a part of a book club, think about starting your own. There are book clubs for mothers and daughters, teens, science fiction/fantasy, mystery, history, romance, and the most popular: fiction. There are even foodie book clubs, where groups meet monthly, bring a dish that matches the theme of that month's book selection, and everyone gets to enjoy a lively book discussion while feasting on great food.

There is no right or wrong way to develop a book club; what's important is deciding what kind of book club you'd like to start. Will it be more formal, or informal? Will you limit the number of participants, or welcome anyone who is interested? Will the club pick titles collectively, or will each person be able to pick a title for everyone to read? Will people take turns leading monthly discussions, or will it be more informal, with everyone taking the lead?

It's all up to you, and best of all, you can change it up by experimenting and finding what works for your group. Some book groups don't even pick a book to discuss, but instead spend their meetings talking about what each member has read over the past month. Just one warning: bring a notebook, because you'll want to write down titles to add to your reading list.

The Marion Public Library is proud to be celebrating 10 years of book club kits at our library. They may be checked out for five weeks, and include seven copies of each title for book groups. The Metro Library Network offers a variety of book club kits; just go to the Marion Public Library online catalog and search under "book club kit" to bring up the list of kits available. The Marion Library also offers meeting rooms that may be reserved for book club meetings during library hours.
