70 YEARS AGO 1947

The Marion Independent School board has set January 14 for the vote on the proposed $200,000 school board election. Voting will take place in the basement of the Marion Carnegie Library, from noon until 7 p.m. If approved, the funds will be used for a number of projects. One of the first to be considered will be an addition to the high school, located at 5th Avenue and 13th Street.

The long-sought youth center in Marion is scheduled to open in the high school building this coming Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Membership dues have been set at $1.00 a year. Because the school year is half over, the first fee will be 50 cents. Activities will include ping pong, darts, cards, dancing to juke box music and refreshments. Closing will be one-half hour before the curfew in Marion.

The Church of God building, 9th Avenue and 6th Street, will be under remodel. City Clerk, Mildred Titus, issued the church a permit for $550.

The Farmers State Bank is advertising its new facility, located on 8th Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets. There is plenty of parking with 60 spaces, two drive-in teller windows and lots of space within the building.

The Herren Floor Covering Service has moved to the building formerly occupied by the Cira Food Market at 1038 7th Avenue.

Santa Claus and his friend, Rudolph, visited City Park last week and greeted many children with their Christmas lists in hand. Santa listened to the requests and the children enjoyed patting Rudolph.

The Marion Independent School board has rejected a bid of $35,000 from the NPS Group for Longfellow School. Superintendent Harold Hulleman contends that the bid is far too low. Hulleman gave two other reasons for not approving the bid. One is that the building might be leased for a year at a price which would cover maintenance of the building. The second is that Longfellow might serve as an all-day kindergarten building if the state of Iowa issues a mandate for this service in the near future.
