Indians win one, drop one
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · December 14th, 2017

The Marion boys' basketball team defended their home court nicely last week with a victory over Independence, and almost picked up a hard-fought road win over Williamsburg, but in the end the Raiders prevailed. With another split of games, the Indians fell back to .500 on the season.

In the 48-37 victory over the Mustangs, senior Chase Zielke led the Indians to victory with 13 points and six assists while Alex Whalen finished with 10 points and a pair of steals. Jevin Manderscheid scored nine points, Trevor Paulsen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Matthew Brase dished out a team-best five assists in the win.

A big third quarter lifted Williamsburg to victory last Friday night. With Marion leading 20-18 at halftime, the Raiders outscored the Indians 26-18 in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into the fourth and held onto the lead. Paulsen had a team-high 16 points to go along with three steals, while Zielke finished with 15 points and two blocks. Sophomore Connor Whalen came off the bench and finished with seven points and four rebounds in the losing effort.

Marion now sits at 2-2 on the season. On the slate this week will be a road bout with Benton Community and a home game against Center Point-Urbana.
