Top-ranked Saints knock down Linn-Mar
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · December 14th, 2017

In a battle of ranked metro opponents and what was considered by many across the state to be the game of the week, Class 3A's top-ranked team Cedar Rapids Xavier cruised to victory over Class 4A's number seven Linn-Mar Lions. The Saints rolled to a 60-39 victory on their home court last Friday evening in Cedar Rapids.

Things got started nicely for the Lions as they led 12-9 after one quarter of play. But the second quarter was when the wheels fell off for the visiting team as Xavier outscored Linn-Mar 28-5 to take a 37-17 lead into halftime. The Lions never could cut the deficit down to single digits and went on to suffer their first loss of the season.

Senior Jacob Robertson led the team in scoring with 10 points to go along with a pair of blocks on the defensive end. Jack Gersen came off the bench to score eight points, while starters Nolan Ruff and Trey Hutcheson each scored five points apiece. Xavier's Matthew Mims led all scorers with 27 points and also finished with seven rebounds and five assists.

Linn-Mar now sits at 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Mississippi Valley Conference play. The team competed against Dubuque Wahlert this past Tuesday (results unknown at press time) and is scheduled to play Cedar Rapids Prairie this Friday, December 15, after the girls' team plays at 6 p.m.
