The Sons of the American Legion honor parents and help children
by DJ Kauffman Correspondent · January 4th, 2018

The Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.) contribute to the welfare of children and youth and give honor where honor is due--to their parents who served in the American armed services.

"All male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of members of the American Legion and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during WW1, WW11 and the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, and the Persian Gulf War during the delimiting periods set forth in Article IV, Section 1 of the National Constitution of the American Legion, or who died susequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Legion." []

The S.A.L. Squadron 298 of Marion in particular for 2017, had 143 paid members, seven being charter members. The first charter had 23 members and was introduced through the American Legion in 1998, said Jon Trimble, Adjutant. The S.A.L. is a separate organization from the American Legion, with some male members belonging to both.

S.A.L. meetings are held at The American Legion Post 298, at 625 31st Street in Marion, the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., and dues are $20 per year. They have supported the Marion YMCA, Ronald McDonald House, Marion Cares, Marion Parks and Rec Baseball, and other organizations by sponsoring seven open-to-the-public breakfasts each fall and spring.

According to Trimble, each year, five officers are elected, and the Squadron Commander is elected every other year. For 2018, the officers are: Lyle Hiems Commander; Tim Gunn, Vice Commander; Robbie Bolyard, Finanace; Jon Trimble, Adjutant; John Mann, Sgt. at Arms; and Scott Garbe, Chaplain.

For more information or if you want to join, please call the American Legion at 319-377-8320 who will then notify the S.A.L. who will reply promptly, Trimble said.
