Indians move to 17-0
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · February 1st, 2018

They knew it wasn't going to be easy, and at times it might not be fun, but that didn't stop the top-ranked Marion girls' basketball team from prevailing in their toughest test to date. The Indians survived and edged rival Center Point-Urbana, 53-50, in a WaMaC Conference thriller last Friday night in Marion to stay undefeated at 17-0.

The Stormin' Pointers led after one quarter of play before the Indians turned things up in the second and third quarters, taking a 40-31 lead into the fourth. Center Point-Urbana threw the kitchen sink at Marion but it wasn't enough to unseat the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Senior star Chloe Rice had a team-high 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists to lead the Indians to victory. Sophomore Kayba Laube chipped in with 10 points of her own, while freshman Riley Wright made an impact off the bench with nine points and five boards.

Earlier in the week, Marion defeated Benton Community for the second time this season by a final score of 68-21. Laube had 21 points, six steals and four rebounds to lift the Indians to victory while junior Leah Van Weelden came off the bench and made an impact, finishing with 11 points, four boards, and three steals.

Marion has just four more games left in the regular season, with two road contests scheduled for this week against Vinton-Shellsburg and South Tama.
