Wempen second at MVC Super Meet
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · February 1st, 2018

The Mississippi Valley Conference is loaded in each and every weight with talented kids, some weights more so than others, but nevertheless the hard work, dedication and skill are always on display. That statement was true this weekend for annual MVC Super Meet but unfortunately for the Linn-Mar wrestling team, they did not manage to crown any champions despite some great efforts. The Lions sent just one wrestler to the finals as Jacob Wempen had his sights set on taking down top-ranked 170-pound Ben Sarasin from Cedar Rapids, Kennedy.

After cruising to the finals with a pair of 17-second pins and a 9-0 major decision over Dubuque Wahlert's Kolton Bartow, the stage was set between undefeated Sarasin and Wempen. The two battled it out but when the dust settled it was Sarasin who would get the 7-4 win and move to 33-0 on the season. The loss was Wempen's second of the season, falling to 34-2 on the year.

Isaiah Garman scored a bronze medal at 220 pounds, placing third in his weight class. Garman took down Xavier's Kyle Krezek by decision and then picked up a major decision over Dubuque Senior's Declan Sisler to advance to the semifinals. Garman then suffered a loss via medical forfeit against Wahlert's Boone McDermott. The senior would bounce back and win in an ultimate tiebreaker over Jefferson's Dawson Sweet 3-2 to get third.

Bryce Parke placed fourth at 106 pounds while Tanner Schultz also finished fourth at 195 pounds to help the Lions place eighth with 115 points. City High won the conference title with 221 points, while Iowa City West's Nelson Brands was named the Conference's Most Outstanding Wrestler for the fourth time in as many years.
