Friends of the Marion Parks bestows Volunteer Appreciation Award
by By Suanne Huffman · February 8th, 2018

"Whatever your life's work is, do it well." Martin Luther King Jr's words resonate with many, but they have special meaning to Pat Kress. To honor her service to Friends of the Marion Parks (FMP), Pat was chosen by the FMP Board as the recipient of its 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Award.

After retiring from a career as a publicist for the Linn-Mar Community Schools, Pat never completely left the world of communication. Without publicity, most organizations, no matter how initially successful, could fail. It's a credit to Pat who offered her services as Publicity Chair for the next 14 years to tell FMP's story.

Pat's contribution didn't end there, though. When someone was needed at the Swamp Fox booth, or providing food for the Marion Parks Appreciation Luncheon, Pat could be counted on. One special responsibility was to serve as the FMP's liaison with the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival. Not only did Pat suggest this as FMP's fundraiser, but she also organized participants to work the event each year.

Marion is very special to Pat. She and her husband Charlie could be seen at many events promoting the community. One special interest of theirs was Lowe Park and the Klopfenstein Amphitheater, both begun during Charlie's tenure as Treasurer of the Marion Park Foundation.

Pat recently announced her resignation from the FMP Board. Pat, though, is not done with her life's work. To honor Charlie's service, a sundial will be constructed next spring at Lowe Park to engage children and adults alike. It's evident that Pat will never quit doing "her life's work well."
